Overclocked explores the alien nature of human cognition, the way in which we perceive our environment through an approximated

prediction computed in the brain - updated/corrected in response to sensory stimuli. The work draws a parallel between our own

perceptual machinery and that of machine learning and AI.

An Indo-Futuristic project exploring narratives of climate change, through the storytelling power of Indian dance mudras and Machine Learning powered hand gesture recognition.

Give me a Sign is an audiovisual experience that invites audiences to engage in a philosophical, analytical and speculative conversation around today’s climate change narrative to imply that non-action is not an option. Interacting with an illusionary AI entity called ‘Shunya’ using specific Indian dance mudras (hand gestures), audiences can unlock poetic insights and concerns relating to the climate emergency.

In the tradition of science fiction, the artwork employs fantastical means with the help of AI to digest and think about difficult and overwhelming situations such as our changing climate, probing into insecurities, confronting them and speculating about the change coming and how might we live in this new and potentially hostile environment. The project highlights the power of physical gestures in expressing meaning in relation to our physical environment. Repurposing mudras to reconnect with nature and convey the climate concerns we face, Give me a Sign hopes to build a bridge between humans, machines and cultures.
Built with a range of AI tools:

- Live hand gesture recognition: driven and trained using MediaPipe Handpose & Ml5 Neural Network

- 3D animation: choreography captured with Deepmotion and retargeted in Unreal Engine

- Backdrops Midjourney

Give Me A Sign premiered a prototype at the Future Fantastic Festival at HOME in Manchester (UK) February 2023, Rangashankara in Bangalore (IN) March 2023 and Bangalore International Centre March 2023.

The Thames arteries flow serving as the historic source and lifeblood of colonial commerce; Deptford, once a working class dockers and ship building neighbourhood, forms part of the ground from which grew the British Empire.

The river begs to be fed… Imperial Capitalism erodes and consumes the energy of its subjects; people, animals, materials, ecosystems… the Earth. We live in a time of compulsory obsolescence, from the shuttering of historic industries to the force feeding of garbage products, we are subjected to a decline in quality and loss of pride in producing the best, to a disposable culture where nothing is meant to last, conjuring an ongoing need for new junk to be then discarded and added to the slag pile of the defunct. A hunger for the new and the novel now agitates our bellies, new trends and fashions emerge at an unsettling speed, further accelerating the build-up of the unwanted and obsolete.

A seam between the open seas and the mega-city, where the ebb and flow of natural life in the river, and the human use of it, is in constant tidal liquidity. Canary Wharf; infested by rats throughout history, some following trails of grain from ships arriving into colonial docklands, to the present day corporate rats in their offices, nibbling on the fat of society. Consumption is intimately linked with waste, high levels of commercial and human waste are found throughout the river’s industrialised history, culminating in the Great Stink of 1858 which drove people to leave London. The Natural History Museum declared in 1957 that the Thames is “biologically dead” and cannot support natural life, to now surprisingly becoming rated one of the world's cleanest city rivers. European Eels were some of the first species to recolonise the Thames in its new clarity. In a life that mimics the transatlantic trade routes, they take three years migrating 4000 miles from birth in the Sargasso Sea to the Thames where they live for 20 years before returning across the Atlantic to re-spawn and die. There is a precarity to life in this still-fragile ecosystem that mimics London’s life on land, where people struggle to survive under pressures imposed by corporations and government with systems beyond the subject’s control.

Where once we created buildings of marvel that have stood a thousand years of history, we now face the horror of new-build blocks of flats that fall into disrepair within a few years. In the shadow of the regeneration of the dock pier, rotten and sodden timber slipways prop up the local fight against an encroaching wave of development over the last 10 years. Capitalism disintegrates the will of those at its lowest rungs of the ladder, climbing it now seems like an exercise in futility, you cannot fight this tide.

There's so much detritus, so much to break down - from the material to the psychological within this rich, festering mud lurking, the insatiable surge of human-made objects, reduced to a redundant foamy scum. Along these algaefied historic banks, work mimics the non-permanence of ephemeral consumer spoil—deteriorating, decomposing, dissolving—in the wake of the lapsed tide. A refraction of our disposable culture, actualisation to dissolution, made to be unmade, surrendering to the temporal zone; their biodegradable bodies unravel, to the point of no return, rendering defunct within the artworld commodity cycle. The industry of commodities turns auto-destructive, we create to consume, drowning in the currents of relevancy. Art, as the ultimate commodity, often drifts into obsolescence: permanently uninstalled, untouched, sealed in storage, owned but unseen. Trickling down to a rapid collapse, the city’s aorta pumps new life in a battle of instant depreciation, is this the endgame?

Make an offer! Everything must go!

Panarchy Paradise probes notions of deep entanglement, hyper-relationality and the potential for catastrophe within socio-ecological systems by navigating the intrinsically interwoven chemical, material, biological, informatic and energetic flows - coursing and cascading through multi-scalar structures, networks and ecologies within physical and virtual domains. A morphogenic meditation on the dense, infinitely connected webs and vectors of relation - connecting all life and matter all the way down. A dance of continual emergence, transformation and plasticity along intersecting lunatic geometries and unpredictably turbulent trajectories.
As we pivot on our temporal axis towards an imminent critical edge, a destructive discontinuity flips the equilibrium mutating the flow. Weird systemic behaviours unfold, catalysed through the manipulative nature of human proliferation. How do we situate ourselves within this tempestuous and twisting, topological space? What will result from this loss of resolution and untangling of knots, and what will emerge from such catastrophic beginnings?

SOUR DIRT

attempts to render the poisonous, weedy and weird reality of digital world making by navigating the liminal spaces between unruly wilds, non-living growth and toxic clouds. Developed within a time of multivalent crises, this works maps an experiential unconscious of our relationship to Land/Life/Nature and how we interact, manipulate and journey through it within physical and digital spaces. Interrogating the ways in which we consume, image, capture and experience ecologies and landscapes in the physical and virtual realm, using this as an analogy for complex stories of our mutating climate and our ceaseless extraction, manipulation, production and consumption

[un]dead Labour probes questions of the contemporary
developments of automation, networked society, digital
agents and the addictive nature of data driven applications. We now find ourselves on the cusp of a Fourth
Industrial Revolution where complex computational
systems have become second nature, embedded within
all aspects of life.
The project draws a parallel between sugar and data/
data driven applications; both being one of the most valuable
commodities of their time along with a shared
schizophrenic nature, providing happiness, delight and
enjoyment whilst also having darker insidiousrealities
of addiction, power and control. We are
entranced by our divisive devices, enslaved in invisible
labour, stuck within the loop, from individual to integer,
repeating our function until we have overindulged in
nauseating waves of informatic eye candy.

The planet is no longer tamed, relentless storms and abyssal dark sea swells ravage the exposed outer extremities of a desolate world. Amidst a hostile terrain, formed of bare skeletal rock, atmospheric anomalies whip up haunting winds of silicon dust particles, remnants from once abundant technological hardware. Abiotic soils smother the surface, lying upon the sedimentation of ancient biogenic matter whilst molten organic alloys ooze through infected mucosal pores. Bacterial colonies digested vast reservoirs of putrid petrochemical waste, their assimilation ensuring survival over a new ecological deep time.

Anthropogenic by-products seeped into every living cell, suffocating, obscuring and embedding a toxic eventuality into the biosphere, laying the path for unimaginable and diabolical becomings. Crystalised and irradiated mineral nutrients absorbed by xeno-fungal growths manifested the co-evolution of our exobiological substrates, cultured and cured in an elemental acidified environment. Infinite horizons stretch across barren bedrocks poisoned by extremophilic organisms and petrified chimeric frontiers of life exist as evidence of terrestrial denaturing in the time of obsolescence. It was the echoes from the geophysics that penetrated the sharp air with messages from the Xenocene. It was the lifeforms that came from lands of terra incognito [the unknown] to affect terra immortuos [the undead] through a process of planetary scale biological terror-forming.

Much as their [micro]plastics slowly gained environmental traction by entering the digestion of the deep sea population, rogue RNA released through directed evolution experiments gradually entered the biosphere. A tide awash of 180,000 exons, thousands of strands removed during RNA splicing procedures to alter the wider exome. Although a small part of their genome, the exome was responsible for nearly all of the mutations and diseases that they came to bare. Their exon RNA strands entangled within a synergistic death pact with the telluric Exxon, one of the ancient types of petroleum based fuel that ravaged this land.

Their technological advancement allowed us to stretch our genetic potential and accelerate our own evolution, providing essential tolerances against the deadly wet heat where others soon perished. What is alive is noxious, a proliferation of things once kept in balance swarm and bloom throughout the Earth’s liquid mass in a brightly coloured gelatinous deluge. Cryogenic fragments thawed and released in accelerated states of synthetic development complicated the relational tangle of living matter…

Technochemical plague pits brought about a primal chaos, once laid dormant but now awoken out of an ethereal hibernation, rebooted with mutated symbiotic alliances.

‘Human bodies swarm with a multitude of putatively alien others’ (Shildrick, 2016)
We are not alone and have never been throughout our evolutionary becoming. Our fleshy cumbersome forms are Kin[1] to a lively throng of “alien others”—microorganisms—the majority residing in the gut. We exist through a mutualistic entanglement with our endosymbionts, sharing essential resources and gaining added metabolic abilities.
We arrive at a decentralised non-anthropocentric consideration of the body, where life is executed by chemical codes through an inner messy logic. Living matter is activated within a complex open system where mutualistic and synergistic relations occur in an ever-ongoing force of becoming.
Scientists engage in a multitude of material and computational practices to tell stories of living matter. Creepy artifacts are created as new knowledge makers, elucidating the intangible, allowing for new ways of seeing.
[1] The proposition that we are “kin” to microorganisms in our gut takes reference from Donna Haraway, where the understanding of “kin” that may lie “outside what we thought was family or gens”, to one which hints to human/microbe co-evolution and symbiotic relations where we have come into being or “become-with” these microbes as close collaborators in life (Haraway, 2015).
